Superyacht designers are in charge of turning outrageous dreams into reality. Amanda McCracken went to meet the men of the moment at Michael Leach Design to find out how they have earned a global reputation by wowing the most hard-to-wow clients on the planet. In the two decades that I have been working as an editor in this business, superyacht design has ricocheted from glorious classics to voluminous palaces. Then there are the real thoroughbreds, designs which cross the line of genius and enter the realms of madness… in the sense that they are so completely different, engineered to the last millimetre in a way that tests the metal of all who put the ship together. They push the boundaries of reason and regulation, and stretch the shipyards to the maximum, creating something totally bespoke for those with the guts to pay for a vision. Forty years ago, we would be talking about the first grand master of design, John Bannenberg, who bucked the trend and turned yacht design upside down. Emanating from his triumphs came a plethora of creative talent - Terence Disdale, Philippe Starck, Ed Dubois, Don Starkey and Andrew Winch to name just a few. Now, their protégés are starting to make a name for themselves. { 47 } Superyacht Living & Style Magazine 2013
